Where does the data come from?

The data comes from interest.co.nz. 
It shows a simple average for each bank's interest rate at 5pm on a Friday.
Because this shows a simple average, the interest rate you can get will differ from the rate you see.
However, this graph will give you a good sense of how interest rates are changing over time.

How do mortgage interest rates impact house prices?

If mortgage rates decrease, taking out a mortgage becomes more affordable. So, people are more likely to take out extra debt and pay the price for the house they want.
This pushes up house prices.
If mortgage rates increase, then taking out a mortgage is more expensive. This means people are less likely to take out extra debt to buy the house they want.
This causes house prices to soften compared to what they would otherwise be.

Which banks are included in the data?

From January 2018 onwards, the data includes the ten core banks active in the New Zealand mortgage market. 
For any data before January 2018, the average includes all banks. 
This does mean that any data before January 2018 will overstate the accurate market level.

Can I download the data?

No. We don’t have a feature that lets you download the data on our website.
We also don’t email out spreadsheets containing the data.

Can I reference the data in my article or research project?

Yes, you can reference the data if you are writing a report, article, or research project. 
If you do, it’s best to reference that the data comes from interest.co.nz.
That way, if people want to check the updated data, they know where to find it.
